STARS

Supporting Teachers And childRen in Schools (STARS) is a cluster RCT comparing the Incredible Years Teacher Classroom Management (TCM) course to Teaching As Usual in primary sschool children in Devon

Project Overview

This is a cluster RCT of the Incredible Years TCM course versus Teaching As Usual with combined economic and process evaluations.

One teacher and their class of children aged 4–9 years and their parents from 80 primary schools in Devon will take part. We will recruit schools in three cohorts of 15, 30 and 35 schools respectively and each school will participate for three academic years to allow two years of follow up.

The primary outcome measure is the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) completed by teachers prior to randomisation, and at 9, 18 and 30 months follow-up, supplemented by parent SDQs. Secondary measures include academic attainment, children’s enjoyment of school, and teacher reports of their professional self-efficacy, and levels of burn out and stress, supplemented by structured observations of teachers classroom management skills in a subsample. Cost data for the economic evaluation will be based on parental reports of services accessed. The process evaluation will use quantitative and qualitative approaches to assess fidelity to model, as well as explore headteacher and teachers’ experiences of TCM and investigate school factors that influence the translation of skills learnt to practice.
